Blessed in Ink

Sacred Scripture is holy writing. Calligraphy is beautiful writing. This ministry group is targeted for 8th-12th graders to express themselves artistically through modern calligraphy while also learning how the scribes, monks and calligraphers of old wrote, and the tools they used. Sure, it can probably be done more quickly and easier on a computer. But let’s spend some time together, with pens and brushes, paper and inks. We will learn modern calligraphic script. There is a lot to be learned from millenniums of writing. We can inspire and encourage each other now.  We can leave our mark for the future.

Society needs artists, just as it needs scientists, technicians, workers, professional people, witnesses of the faith, teachers, fathers and mothers.  Artists have their unique place.  Obedient to their inspiration in creating works both worthwhile and beautiful, they not only enrich the cultural heritage of each nation and of all humanity, but they also render an exceptional social service in favour of the common good.  (from the Letter of His Holiness Pope John Paull II to Artists 1999)
